Fish Out of Water

All the research I read tells me my generation is all about social networking. Well, I have a confession. The first time I went on Facebook was last week, and I had to use my husband’s account because I don’t even have one. Yep, I don’t even have a Facebook page. And to be honest, my first experience with Facebook was pretty frustrating. I was trying to find information for my weekly newsletter and it took about 30 minutes to do one search.!@!

I’m sharing this because if I were an employee at your company, I wouldn’t even know how to use a social network, much less learn on one. While it may be true that the majority of Gen Yers would prefer this learning method, there are some that don’t.

That’s not to say that we would prefer having a large binder with pages and pages of facts. We still want some interactivity with learning; it’s just that social networks aren’t always our thing. Just because the majority of a generation learns one way doesn’t mean you should change all of your learning to adapt to them. You have to provide many options, so that every employee can find something that works for him, or her, or me!
