We’re living in a society that appreciates individual and team performance, and we’re living in a society that has determined numerous avenues to honor achievement. From rookie athletes to veteran movie stars, from educators to entrepreneurs, there’s an awards program to stand up and take notice of success.

Why should our industry be any different? We’re in the business of performance improvement, and few things deserve acclaim more than the hard work it takes to help others excel.

That’s why we launched the CLO Learning in Practice awards, to recognize the sometimes-thankless efforts senior learning executives like you put forth. Nearly 100 learning programs were reviewed by 18 judges, all learning leaders themselves. The results are impressive.

Winners of the annual competition were announced recently at the Fall 2004 CLO Symposium, but their accomplishments are so inspiring, I wanted to introduce all CLO readers to them. In the pages of this Chief Learning Officer magazine supplement, you’ll meet 12 dynamic learning executives and hear about the projects and programs that earned the attention of our judges.

You’ll share in some incredible successes in these following pages, which highlight award-winning learning and development programs from major corporations and government organizations. You’ll recognize many of your peers here, and you’ll meet some role models worth emulating.

I know you’ll appreciate the work described in the profiles that follow. Each of the nominees deserved to be winners, and each of the winners represent amazingly talented teams. But remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and behind these thought leaders and innovative programs are learning professionals like yourself. These award-winners have raised the bar; keeping it elevated falls to you.

I hope you find the stories contained here to be engaging and encouraging. I hope you take away some inspiration and ideas for your own organization. Most of all, I hope next year we’ll be sharing your story as a Learning In Practice honoree.
