A Month of Milestones

As I write this month’s column, I am sitting on an airplane after wrapping up my third business trip in the past four weeks. It is mid-June, and I know you will not be reading this until some time in September. (This should give you some idea of a magazin

I have been reading Hillary Clinton’s autobiography, but my mind keeps focusing on an honor this magazine received last night. If you have not heard by now, the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) has named Chief Learning Officer the “Best New Publication” of the past year. I am as proud as a father watching his child take his first steps.

It’s ironic that I get to report this honor in this issue. While the fanfare may be missing, this September issue of Chief Learning Officer marks our first anniversary, and several other milestones I want to share with you.

First is our new publishing schedule. Effective with this issue, you will begin receiving Chief Learning Officer more often. With your support, we are now able to increase frequency from six times per year to monthly. One of the first lessons we learned a year ago was that space is finite, even though there’s an awful lot to write about in the enterprise education industry. We’re delighted to now be in a position to do more, and more often.

With our expanded schedule, we have seized the opportunity to broaden the views of our columnists. In addition to Bob Mosher, Peter Martin, Kevin Kruse, Nader Nanjiani and Tom Kelly, we will be alternating with the insights of Stephen R. Covey, Fred Harburg, Jay Cross and Nick Van Dam.

Jack Phillips will bring his expertise to our Business Intelligence column, alternating with Jennifer Vollmer from the META Group. And beginning next month, industry icon Jeanne Meister will wrap up each issue with her “In Conclusion” column.

On that subject, Jeanne is the bridge to another milestone. Chief Learning Officer will be launching a symposium series next year, and Jeanne has agreed to be our chairperson. Mark your calendar now to join us Feb. 16 to 18, 2004 at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel in Dana Point, Calif., and Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, 2004 at the Hyatt on Coconut Point in Bonita Springs, Fla., to meet, greet and participate in two events designed specifically for you. Jeanne has put together a terrific program with some fascinating speakers that we feel will be a great complement to Chief Learning Officer magazine.

And that leads me to the final milestone for this busy issue. We are expanding our e-Seminar series to provide you with more dialogue with our contributors and other industry experts. Since the launch of the CLO e-Seminar program last December, we have seen a steady increase in reader participation. If you have not attended one of these free, one-hour programs, I would encourage you to check them out. To see what’s coming up, you can visit www.clomedia.com/eseminars.

It’s been quite a first year. As we begin our second year, let me take a moment to thank the people who have contributed to our award-winning success. Our editors, art and production staffs, our circulation people and ad sales group have all worked together to create, produce and market Chief Learning Officer. We have been blessed with an Editorial Advisory Board that has selflessly guided our every move since members first met by conference call in the spring of 2002. They all share in this ASPBE honor we have received from our peers.

But more than anyone, the thanks go to you. Without readers, seminar attendees and conference-goers, there’s no point in any of what we do. You readers have helped us with your encouragement, your feedback and your support to achieve the success and accolades of this past year, and your contributions have not gone unnoticed.

Gratefully,

Norm Kamikow
