Virgin HealthMiles, a member of Sir Richard Branson’s world-renowned Virgin Group, announced that the company’s award-winning HealthMiles program will be rolled out to employees of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in early 2009.
The state has incorporated Virgin HealthMiles as part of the Commonwealth’s Journey to Wellness Program. Kentucky is the first state in the nation to launch the Virgin HealthMiles program to all state employees.
Virgin HealthMiles is a first-of-its kind health incentives program designed to get an employer’s workforce more active and healthy. Virgin leverages its extensive consumer experience to bring a fresh approach to wellness by keeping fun at the core of the program that keeps large percentages of employees engaged (ranging from 30 to 85 percent).
Virgin HealthMiles takes a unique approach to activity, encouraging employees to do what they enjoy most and all kinds of activities are encouraged, supported and incented as employees make strides on their journey toward healthier living.
“We are taking the first steps to move this state forward by introducing the Virgin HealthMiles program where employees are encouraged to take an active role in their own health by competing to lower Kentucky’s high national adult obesity and chronic disease rates,” said Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear. “A healthy workforce is not only a matter of quality of life for our teachers, state employees and retirees; it is critical to government productivity.”
Beginning in 2009, Commonwealth employees will be able to join HealthMiles and earn rewards for increasing their physical activity and improving their health. Employee participants will track their daily steps or other physical activity with a pedometer and can upload their data to their own personal tracking program. Commonwealth participants stay motivated with challenges and monthly sweepstakes for cash prizes. A participant's chance of winning the monthly sweepstakes is enhanced the more they participate in the program.
“We are excited to be working with leading employers, such as the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to help improve the health and wellness of their workforce,” said Chris Boyce, Virgin HealthMiles’ CEO. “It’s an honor for Virgin HealthMiles and the Virgin Group to be working with the great people of Kentucky as they lead the way toward better health for all citizens.”
