A changing economy, the need for increased business flexibility and an ever-increasing supply of downsized baby boomers too young for retirement has spawned a new job site putting skilled workers directly in touch with the companies that need them.
StarfishPeople.com, the brainchild of owner Desiree Pitman, is a company-exclusive job board designed for the consulting and contract-to-hire industry, allowing employers and workers to negotiate directly.
Pitman, an executive recruiter for the past 15 years, wants to grow the largest community of consultants and contractors for her clients to choose from.
“There are currently 10.3 million independent contractors in the United States and we want to give them a place to showcase their services and cast a larger net,” Pitman said. “There are also a lot of displaced workers that may become consultants or contractors.”
Pitman said StarfishPeople.com was designed for the consulting industry but many of her clients are posting positions for permanent roles. The board covers industries including manufacturing, finance, banking, insurance, healthcare, pharmaceutical, information technology, bio-technology and medical device. Its candidates are exclusive to the companies that register with it.
Pitman is marketing to a growing level of workers and hiring companies. The most recent figures provided by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) show about 30 percent of the overall workforce — some 42 million workers — are independent contractors, part-timers and temporary workers.
In addition to individual workers, Pitman believes StarfishPeople.com will also provide an edge to professional consulting firms seeking consultants, and for small businesses, limited partnerships and sole proprietorships searching for clients. The board is already in use by companies including EMC Corp., Kohler, Bayer HealthCare, and Tushaus Computing Services.
