Right Management’s Research Reveals Changing Needs for People in Career Transition

    Wednesday October 3, 2007

    Philadelphia — Oct. 3
Individuals in career transition today want outplacement services that stay connected with them until they are able to secure a new opportunity and provide them with the tools and resources to gain a competitive edge in a challenging employment market, according to research of 21,000 outplacement candidates in 19 countries by Right Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of Manpower Inc.

With outplacement services typically ending before many candidates achieve successful career objectives, employees in transition want outplacement services that remain continuously connected with them until their desired career goals are reached.

“Displaced employees are no longer just seeking another job like their previous one — they are more frequently changing career directions, and their job searches have become much more diverse,” said Douglas J. Matthews, Right Management president and chief operating officer. “They are seeking assistance with changing job functions and industries and help with exploring a range of work-life options, entrepreneurial and retirement alternatives.”

Right Management’s research uncovered key insights into the criteria for satisfaction and success for outplacement candidates.

This research was critical in Right Management’s development of RightChoice, an innovative, global outplacement service that supports individuals all the way through to transition success.

“According to our research, candidates’ satisfaction is highly dependent on one-on-one career guidance, access to critical skills and content specialized to their career situations and objectives," Matthews said. "RightChoice has tailored its services in the areas that matter most to separated employees.”

According to Right Management’s research, outplacement candidates today want:

    • Continuous Connections:  Employees want outplacement service to continue until they have achieved a successful outcome which they define — whether securing a new job, starting a business or exploring work-life options. Industry standards have shown two-thirds of candidates’ programs expire before they successfully transition to new roles. They don’t want to be abandoned midway through their searches.
    • Jump-Start in the Process: Candidates want their outplacement programs to begin fast, so their transitions are smoother and more quickly produce new opportunities, which they feel is a competitive advantage in a challenging job market.
    • Expert Career Guidance: Displaced employees are seeking personalized support from career and job-resource consultants whose expert guidance ensures they identify the best possible career paths — and pursue these successfully.
    • Varied Access to Resources: Candidates want anytime, anywhere access to career assistance, whether from their homes or outplacement firms’ offices.
    • Market Connections: People in transition want help in building, expanding and managing their career networks. According to Right Management’s research, 42 percent of outplacement candidates found new positions through networking.
    • Skills and Tools: Candidates want a full arsenal of tools that will help them conduct and manage an effective career transition.
    • Superior Technology: Online resources available 24x7 with a high-touch human element are in demand.

“Workforce reductions are a painful reality, and organizations realize the importance of providing support that enables separated employees to transition into new roles as quickly as possible with the least disruption to their lives," Matthews said. "What that support looks like today is different than it was 20 years ago. RightChoice is our response to the evolving needs of our clients and candidates.”
